Notes from the Chair…
The Tempe Historic Preservation Foundation wants to keep you apprised of ongoing efforts to preserve our significant past as we move into what sometimes seems an uncertain future. How wonderful it would be if we allowed the under-appreciated treasures in our community to guide us along the way. The stories they tell are crucial to our sustainability and community.
The Foundation is proud to have opened the newly rehabilitated Eisendrath House and Center for Water Conservation to the public in November. This project was the long ago dream of three women to whom we owe much. Evelyn Hallman, Darlene Justus and Sue Enright were not going to take “no” for an answer. They knocked on the necessary doors and would not be turned away in their quest to preserve this historic treasure. As far back as 2005, the house was succumbing to “adobe melt,” the mud blocks literally melting under the elements. By inspiring others in this mission, these women helped save this diamond in the desert.
We hope this beautiful, historically significant house will become a vital and much visited destination at the Carl Hayden Campus for Sustainability in Papago Park. The City of Tempe has a Water Conservation Office in the house, SRP water conservation displays and a separate (outside the house) SRP Water Conservation classroom which is available to the public for meetings. There is no charge for its use, but it must be reserved in advance. Tours of the Eisendrath House and grounds are available on request.
The Foundation has been busy developing a dynamic program to interpret aspects of Tempe’s history and historic resources. A docent manual, research into history related to the house and docent training in the art of interpretation are well underway. Under the guidance of Peggy Moroney, an experienced docent and accomplished interpreter, trained volunteer docents have provided tours of the Eisendrath House since January. The Foundation will soon call for nominations to this program; we are looking for men and women with a passion for Tempe’s history and historic resources.
